Around fifty automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the liquid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior official commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
